Mango & paisley

மாங்காய்

The mango, or paisley, is the oldest motif in South Indian embroidery and the most forgiving to wear. It repeats cleanly along a border and never looks dated.

Ask about this

Ask for one design here and it will be this one, more often than anything else on this page.

Why it suits almost everything

The shape is a closed curve, so it scales without falling apart. A row of small mangoes along a sleeve edge, a pair meeting at a sweetheart neckline, one large mango filling a back yoke: the same motif reads correctly at every size, which is not true of most designs. That makes it the one motif you can commit to before knowing exactly where it will go.

Traditional weight, modern amount

A mango border in gold zari alone is quiet and completely traditional. The same border filled solid with stone becomes bridal weight. The motif does not change, only how much is put into it, which makes this an easy design to build to a budget rather than cutting a heavy design down.

Where it belongs

Mango borders suit boat necks and square necks particularly well, because both shapes want a running design rather than a single centred motif. On a saree, a mango border on the pallu is the most common request that comes through here, and it is worth planning with the blouse rather than after it.
