A wedding is not one blouse. It is a muhurtham blouse, a reception blouse, usually an engagement piece, often a half-saree function before all of it, and a set for the mother and the sisters. Ordered one at a time they arrive looking like six unrelated decisions.

Planned as one wardrobe

Booked together, they get designed together: related but not identical, so the photographs from the whole week look like they belong to the same family and the same bride.

That means deciding early which piece carries the heaviest work, which palette belongs to daylight and which to a hall, and where the budget should concentrate. Almost always the answer is to put real hand work into fewer places rather than thin work everywhere.

What is covered

• The muhurtham blouse, worked front and back, in the traditional red or maroon ground with gold zari
• The reception blouse, lighter and in a different palette, because a hall and a flash are unkind to heavy stone
• Engagement and betrothal pieces
• Half-saree and langa voni function work for younger girls in the family

The date is the booking, not the design

The single most useful thing you can do is send the wedding date as soon as it is fixed, before anything about the design is decided. A covered bridal blouse holds the frame for two to three weeks, and the frame takes one piece at a time. In muhurtham season every wedding in the district wants the same three weeks.

Reserve the time first. The designs can be argued about for another month and changed twice, and often are.

Fittings

For a bridal piece, be measured in person rather than sending numbers. Come once at the start and once partway through if the design is heavy, because changing a motif in the first week is easy and changing it in the third is not.

What this is not
