Aari and maggam work in Nagercoil
Tanishkha does hand aari work - also called maggam work - from Nagercoil. Bridal blouses, function blouses, saree work and blouse stitching with embroidery, all worked by hand rather than by machine. Bring your own material or send a design you have seen, and we will tell you honestly what it will take and what it will cost.
Bridal work usually takes two to three weeks depending on how heavy the design is. Lighter blouse work is quicker.
What aari work is
Aari work - the same craft many people call maggam work - is hand embroidery worked with a hooked needle. The design is traced onto the fabric, the fabric is stretched tight on a frame, and every bead, stone and length of zari is pulled through by hand.
It is slower than machine embroidery, and it does not look the same. The thread sits differently, the stones are set rather than glued, and it survives being worn and washed.

About us
- Who actually does the work?
- It is worked by hand here in Nagercoil rather than sent out to anybody else. The person you message is the person at the frame.
- Is there a shop I can visit?
- This is a home-based workshop rather than a shop front, which is why the address is not published. Being measured in person and handing work over are both arranged when you message.
