What aari work actually is
Aari work is hand embroidery done with a hooked needle, the aari, pulled through fabric held taut on a wooden frame. In much of India the same craft is called maggam work; in Tamil Nadu it is aari. There is no difference in the technique, only in the word people grew up with.
The design is traced onto the blouse piece first. The fabric is then stretched on the frame, and every bead, stone, sequin and length of zari is set in place by hand, one at a time. Nothing is glued and nothing is run through a machine.
That is why it takes weeks rather than days, and why two blouses worked from the same drawing are never quite identical.
What you can ask for
- Full bridal work - front, back and sleeves, with heavy zari, stone and bead work
- Reception and engagement blouses - usually lighter, often in a different palette from the muhurtham blouse
- Neckline and sleeve work on an otherwise plain blouse, which is the least expensive way to get hand work into a wedding
- Matching work on the saree - pallu, border, or a motif repeated from the blouse
- Half-saree and lehenga choli work for the functions around the wedding
Bring a photograph of something you have seen - a screenshot from Instagram or Pinterest is perfectly normal - and you will get a straight answer on whether it can be done in the time and the budget you have. If it cannot, you will be told that rather than strung along until it is too late to go elsewhere.
Bring your own material
Most customers bring their own blouse piece, cut from the saree or bought separately. That is the usual arrangement and it costs less than having material sourced for you. If you would rather it was sourced, ask, and it can be arranged.
Silk, raw silk, tissue, georgette and net all take aari work, but they do not all behave the same way under the needle. Heavy stone work on a very light fabric needs backing, or the weight pulls the blouse out of shape after a few hours of wear. That is the kind of thing worth deciding before the work starts rather than after.
What decides the price
There is no single rate for a bridal blouse, because no two designs take the same number of hours. What moves it:
- How dense the work is. A design covering a full sleeve takes many times longer than a border.
- Stones and beads, or thread alone. Stone work is slower, and the materials cost more.
- How much of the blouse is covered. Front only, front and back, sleeves, or all of it.
- The fabric. Some silks are slower to work and much less forgiving of a mistake.
- How soon you need it. A rushed date in the middle of muhurtham season is not always possible at any price.

How long it takes
Bridal work is usually two to three weeks, and longer when the design is heavy. Book well before the wedding date. The weeks either side of a muhurtham season fill up early, and a bridal blouse is not work that can be hurried without it showing.

Come and be measured, or send an old blouse that fits you well. Bring your own material - most customers do, and it costs less.

Questions people ask
- Can you copy a bridal blouse design from Instagram?
- Yes, and it is what most people bring. Send the screenshot. Be ready to hear that the design was worked on a different fabric at a different scale and needs adapting rather than copying exactly - a design that fills the neckline of one blouse looks sparse on another.
- Should the reception blouse match the muhurtham blouse?
- They should look like they belong to the same bride without being the same blouse. Muhurtham work is traditional and heavier; reception work is lighter and has to photograph well under hall lighting, where heavy stone flares under a flash. Order both together if you can.
- How much of the blouse should be covered in work?
- Excellent work in three places beats thin work everywhere. Neckline and sleeves is the most common bridal choice and the best value for what is actually seen. Full front, back and sleeves is beautiful and heavy to wear for six hours.
- Do you work on the back of a bridal blouse?
- Yes, and it matters more than people expect - during a temple ceremony a great many of the photographs are of your back. If the budget stretches to one heavily worked area, there is a real argument for it being the back.
- What if my measurements change before the wedding?
- Tell us as soon as you know. Small adjustments are usually possible; a design already worked across a seam is much harder to move. This is one more reason to have the stitching and the work done in the same place.
