Designing from an idea rather than a picture

If you know the colour, the occasion and roughly the feeling you want, but you have not found a design you like, the design gets drawn for you rather than copied. That is a different conversation from "make this one" and it takes longer at the start, which is time well spent.

What it involves: what the saree or the material is, what the function is and what light it happens in, what you are comfortable wearing for six hours, and what you have worn before that you liked or regretted. Then a design, adjusted until it is right, and only then the frame.

Adapting a design, which is more common

The usual case sits between the two. You bring a photograph, and it turns out to be on a different fabric, at a different scale, for a different neckline and a different body. Copying it exactly would be the wrong answer even if it were possible.

So it gets adapted: the density changed for the fabric, the motif scaled to your size, the placement moved to your neckline, the palette shifted to your saree. The result is recognisably the design you liked, made to work on you. Be ready to hear that, because the alternative is a blouse that looked right in somebody else's photograph.

Where the judgement actually matters

• Weight against wear. A design that photographs well and cannot be worn through a long morning is a failed design.
• Light. Stone flares under a hall flash and reads as white blobs; thread and pearl hold. Daylight and temple light do the opposite. The design should be chosen for the room it will be worn in.
• Fabric. Georgette and tissue need backing before stone goes near them. Old silk may not take a heavy design at all, and forcing it ruins the saree.
• Scale. A design that fills one size looks sparse a size up and crowded a size down. Hand work can adapt; a machine cannot.
